Who should I see?

At the Steel City General Practice, we have a dedicated team of very skilled individuals who can help you with a wide variety of health concerns. We can manage your acute health needs as well supporting you with more chronic health problems in the long term.

This is not just done by our GPs and sometimes they are not the most appropriate appointment to ask for. We have highly trained practice nurses and nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacists and physician associates who each have specialist areas of expertise.

Not all appointments are urgent and need seeing on the same day. If a problem has been there for some time, consider booking a routine appointment to give it the attention it deserves, rather than a rushed ‘same day’ appointment which may not give you as much time. Consider submitting a request online where you can clearly explain your concerns and let a GP come back to you with a sensible plan.

Consider the importance of continuity of care; seeing the same clinician that you have been assessed by previously saves everyone a lot of time and saves you from ‘going around in circles’ and getting multiple opinions on the same subject. It may be worth considering, even if this means waiting a couple more days for the appointment.

The appointment you are offered will vary depending on your specific needs and our receptionists are well-trained in helping you decide who is the most appropriate person for you to see and in a timescale that is appropriate.

Self-Care

If you have a cough, cold, headache or other minor ailment try treating yourself at home first.

Please remember that self-care for common conditions can help free up our GPs’ time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.

Your Pharmacist can also help

Pharmacists are highly trained health professionals and can give you confidential health advice for a range of common illnesses and complaints.

Don’t wait for a GP appointment for everyday minor illness. Just give your local pharmacy a call or drop in – there’s usually no need to make an appointment.

Your pharmacists can also help you decide if you need to see a doctor or nurse.
