Covid Boosters and 3rd Doses

Phase 3 of the Covid and booster vaccination programme is now underway

People in eligible cohorts will soon be able to book an appointment through the National Booking Service (NBS) 30 days in advance of the date from which they can get the booster, which is 182 days after the date of their second vaccine.

This means that from 152 days after the date of their second vaccine appointment, eligible people can book their advance appointment for a booster. The actual appointment dates will still only be from 182 days after the date of their second vaccine.

3rd primary doses are not booster doses – they are needed for the patient to develop immunity to Covid 19 and would ideally be given 8 weeks after the second dose of vaccine, however it is only recently that JCVI have recommended a 3rd primary dose and so for some eligible patients their 3rd dose could be several months after their second dose of vaccine. 3rd primary doses are only given to people whose immunity is severely suppressed. Many of them will have a letter from the specialty that is treating them or their GP but some will not.

Booster doses are as the name suggests a boost to an immune system that has already developed immunity to Covid19.
